Welcome to the GonzoFest Literary Journalism Contest Submission Page.
The annual Gonzo Literary Contest, part of GonzoFest Louisville, was created to honor legendary writer and Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Writers from all corners of the world are invited to enter a single piece of literary journalism that captures the essence and spirit of Hunter’s legacy.
All entries are due by 11:59pm EST on March 28, 2018.
Submitting Your Work
This contest is free. Entries must be submitted as a PDF or ePub file, double-spaced. Entries are encouraged to be between 1,500 – 2,000 words and must be unpublished nonfiction, based on your own original reporting, observations, or insights. The entry should include a cover page containing your name, address, and contact information — as well as a brief statement attesting to the entry’s originality.
Once submitted, your entry will be juried by a panel of judges that will include prominent journalists from across the U.S. and Europe. No type of story is preferred over another — so long as it’s true. The emphasis should be on the quality of the writing, and the significance of the story it tells. Judges will look for work that is reported with a keen eye for detail and written in a bold and elegant style, as Thompson’s best work was.
The winning author will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and the winning entry will be considered for publication in the GonzoFest edition of the Louisville Eccentric Observer, Louisville’s venerable alternative weekly newspaper, and the author will be honored during the festival, scheduled for April 14th, 2018, in Louisville.
Winning submissions will also be archived in an online collection on the Louisville Free Public Library’s BiblioBoard page.
